I used a FRIO wallet on my first trip after being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, to keep my insulin at safe temperatures while traveling. It worked well: my insulin stayed under the manufacturer's 86°F max threshold for the entire trip and remained usable until the pen was depleted.

Setup was simple. Soak the wallet in cold water for 20 minutes to activate the cooling gel, spread the gel evenly inside, let it dry, then insert your insulin, and put it in the outer case. The whole process took about 25 minutes the first time. After that, a 2-minute re-soak each day was enough to keep it cool, even though the gel technically lasts up to 45 hours without reactivation.

TSA was a non-issue. Agents asked what I was using for cooling, and once I explained it was a FRIO wallet with cooling gel, they had no problem with it.

One important caveat: the FRIO wallet does not refrigerate insulin. It won't keep an unopened vial or pen at true refrigerator temperatures, so it's not a substitute for refrigeration during storage. It's designed for opened insulin you're actively using, and for that purpose it works well.

My sister recommended the FRIO wallet to me. She's used it for years on trips with her daughter, and it held up for my needs too.

Bottom line: A reliable, low-effort way to keep opened insulin within safe temperature limits while traveling, with no issues at airport security. Just don't expect it to replace refrigeration for unopened insulin.
